Applications are invited to apply for the Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon PhD Scholarships 2026. All International students are welcome to apply for these fully funded PhD scholarships. Those students who want to pursue their PhD degree abroad on a funded scholarship are welcome to apply.
The Helmholtz–Zentrum Hereon, a world-renowned research institution in Germany, is currently inviting bright minds from all over the world to apply for a fully funded PhD post in their Institute of Hydrogen Technology in an era where innovation propels sustainability. This is your opportunity to participate in a DFG-funded study that is revealing the atomic-scale mysteries of high-performance magnesium (Mg) alloys, which are the building blocks of sustainable, robust, and lightweight materials of the future. Hydrogen, a crucial component of the energy shift. For it, hydrogen must be produced, transported, and stored as efficiently as possible. The researchers are focused on material design, fixed energy system architecture, green hydrogen via photoelectrochemistry, and mobile hydrogen storage system design.
This cutting-edge research dives deep into understanding why Mg-rare earth (RE)-based alloys show exceptional strength and ductility. You will conduct ex situ/in situ nanoindentation-based experiments and gain practical expertise with sophisticated microstructural characterization tools such as EBSD, TEM, and SAXS—the ideal fusion of analytical and experimental research. The insights you generate will not only refine current materials but will also contribute to developing RE-free alloy systems and digital material twins, offering a direct impact on future hydrogen storage solutions, aerospace components, and mobility systems.
